In November 2024 the Environment Agency issued a Closure Notice to Walleys Quarry Limited. They concluded the the management of Walleys Quarry was poor and further operation of the site may result in significant long-term pollution.
WQL appealed the notice and also applied for permission for a Judicial Review. The Planning Court refused permission for the review.
At the end of February, Walleys Quarry Limited entered liquidation saying it did not have enough money to pay it’s debts. The liquidators of WQL then disclaimed the environmental permits held by WQL.
Since then the EA has worked with specialist contractors to ensure that the landfill is capped correctly and does not pose a serious risk of pollution.
The Mobile Monitoring Facilities continue to operate and confirm low levels of fugitive landfill gas outside the site. One of the monitoring facilities was removed because of work being carried out at the pumping station by Severn Trent Water.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) continue to work with partners to support residents by analysing air quality data and providing public health risk assessments.
